Power of the Pen Team Advances to State

Fairfield Union Junior High’s Power of the Pen had a tremendous showing at the Ohio University-Lancaster Regional Tournament. They brought home the Sweepstakes Trophy which is awarded to the top school, combining the 7th & 8th grade scores competing against 18 school districts from our southeast region.


Layla Paxton earned a Round 3- Best of Rounds with her story entitled, “Monkey Bars”. She will be announced at the state tournament.


The following students advanced to the 2025 Ashland University State Tournament on Thursday, May 22nd:

Kate Springer

Ella Truax

Mia West

Pearl Baker

Addyson Borah

Rylee Montgomery

Layla Paxton 


They will compete against the TOP writers in the State of Ohio as they creatively write in three, thirty-five minute rounds. The top 25 students will advance to a fourth round in a short thirty-minute writing. A very special thanks to Mia West’s mom, Stephanie West, who is a professional photographer at Stephanie West Photography; she took pictures for our team and donated banners to hang in our school at Rushville Middle School.
