Driver's Education FAQ's

THE BASICS

The Driver Education Course is compiled of two parts:

  1. Ohio Law requires 24 hours of Online education. We offer online classes through ACEABLE.

  2. Ohio Law requires eight (08) hours of behind the wheel instruction. Driving instructors from MOV ESC will provide behind the wheel instruction.

Getting Your License

  1. Ohio Law requires driver's to hold their temporary driving permit or TIPIC for 6 months before they are permitted to take their driving test. (See Ohio Driver Manual on the OHIO BMV Website)

Upon successful completion of both parts of the course, the student will receive a certificate that is presented to the BMV when taking their driving test.

THE DETAILS

Q - How old do I have to be to start the course?

A - 15 years and 6 months and hold a valid temporary driver permit.

Q - Where do I obtain my permit?

A - Students must visit an Ohio Drivers’ License Examining station to obtain their temporary driving permit. For full details on these requirements, visit:  Ohio BMV Permit Requirements

Q - What happens next?

A - Once you have your temporary permit, refer to the Getting Started article: Getting Started Article

Q - Who should I contact if I have questions?
A - Contact your School Site Coordinator Deanna Throckmorton, by phone at 740-536-7384 or by email: [email protected]

Q - How do I communicate with my site coordinator regarding registration and behind-the-wheel schedules?

A - Registration and Behind the Wheel Details and Questions will be answered via email and through the Remind App.

Q - What is the cost of the course?

A - The total cost of the driver education program is $350, and it is broken down into two payments. The first payment is a $100 deposit, and this will register the student for the online portion of the program. The second payment of $250 is required before the student can begin the behind-the-wheel training.

Q - Can I pay the $350 fee in one payment?

A - Yes, you can pay the entire course upfront. Note:  No student will be permitted to start the behind the wheel training until full payment is received.

Q -How/where do I make my payment?

A - Payment will be made through the Muskingum Valley Driver Education Payment Portal. The portal link will be emailed to the parent and student once the registration meeting has taken place.

Q - When do I start the online portion of the course?

A - Once the deposit or full payment is made on the MOV ESC website, the site coordinator will enroll the student in the online course and they will receive an email with their login credentials for the ACEABLE online portal.

Q - What if I am scheduled for a behind the wheel class and I need to cancel?

A - Cancellation of drive time on the part of the student should be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance via the Remind App.

Q - What if I am scheduled for a behind the wheel class and I do not report for the class?
A - In the event of illness or emergency on the part of the student, cancellation on the day of the scheduled drive time should be made through the RemindApp no later than 12 noon Monday-Friday so that ample time is given to assign the driving slot to another student.  Weekend drives should be cancelled a minimum of 90 minutes prior to the start time of the session.
  • If a student does not report for their assigned driving time and did not cancel in advance, a penalty may be imposed as follows:
First offense - Student will not be permitted in-car instruction for one week
Second offense - Student will not be permitted in-care instruction for two weeks
Third Offense - An in-person meeting with parent/guardian(s) and the student will be required with the site coordinator.
Repeated offenses may result in an additional $25 fee which must be paid prior to scheduling the remainder of the student’s in-car instruction.

Q - How long do I have to complete the course?

A - Students must complete the course within 6 months of the start of the process.

Q - How long does the entire course typically take to complete?

A - The Aceable course is a self-paced course. Students are required to complete the online course within 6 months.  Every attempt is made to move students through the behind the wheel portion of the course within 6-8 weeks.

Q - What happens when I complete the course?

A - At the completion of the online and behind the wheel portions of the course, the parent will receive a Final Report to Parents and a certificate of completion will then be issued by the MOV Driving School Official (this is the document the student must present to the Ohio BMV when they take their driver’s license behind the wheel test.)
