Several factors are considered in winter weather related schedule changes. Such factors include the amount of precipitation, the temperature, the wind, the wind chill index, the time a storm arrives in the area, the weather forecast, response of road crews clearing highways and roads, and other such factors. Since there are so many factors to consider, any decision to alter the school schedule is largely judgmental, following road inspection and evaluation of information of multiple weather forecasts. Both the Transportation Supervisor and Superintendent inspect road conditions before making the decision regarding school schedules.
Generally, if the following conditions exist which place children at risk, the school schedule will be changed either by a delayed opening or a cancellation:
1. School will be canceled by 5:45 a.m., unless the decision is simply to “buy” time to further evaluate weather. In this case the actual second decision will then be made no later than 7:30 a.m. Decisions to delay will be made by 5:45 a.m. also.
2. If the temperature is (0ºF) or below, the school schedule may be delayed or canceled, depending upon actual temperatures and the factors listed above.
3. If the wind chill index is in the (-15º F) or below, the school schedule will be delayed or canceled.
4. When the weather forecasts indicate conditions described in 2 or 3 above for the next morning, a delayed opening or cancellation will be announced the night before to assist students, parents, and staff in their planning. If a delay is announced, then a decision to cancel school, if necessary, will be made by 6:00-6:30 a.m. based on actual weather conditions.
